This article is a re-post from a LinkedIn series called “Rhythm & Resolve”. Rhythm & Resolve now lives exclusively on this Substack.
Pain has a way of making the present moment feel like the whole story.
When you are in it, the storm feels total. The pressure, fear, grief, disappointment, anger, or exhaustion can become so loud that everything else sounds dishonest.
But pretending the storm is not real does not make us stronger.
It makes us divided.
We end up performing stability while privately falling apart. We say the right things, keep the routine moving, and hide the parts of us that feel afraid, resentful, or undone.
But the opposite error is just as dangerous.
We can also surrender to the storm completely. We can treat every feeling as final, every fear as wisdom, every wound as identity, and every hard season as proof that life cannot be trusted.
Cadence requires both honesty and anchoring.
Honesty says, “This is what I feel.”
Anchoring says, “This is not all that is true.”
Growth does not come from denying the storm. It comes from learning to stay present inside it without letting it name you.
The goal is not to become untouched by pain.
The goal is to become true in the middle of it.
Feel what is real.
Anchor to what is true.
Then take the next faithful step. Just like a seasoned sailor would.
